Invisalign: The Life-Changing Alternative to Traditional Braces
It’s no secret that straight, well-aligned teeth are an essential part of a great smile. The benefits of straight teeth can take you a long way in life. Unfortunately, the inconvenience and discomfort often associated with traditional braces keep some of our patients from wanting to straighten their crooked teeth. For these patients, Invisalign could be the perfect solution.
How Does Invisalign Work?
Invisalign uses a series of soft plastic aligners that fit comfortably over your teeth to gradually and gently cause tooth movement. This orthodontic treatment option has no metal, is virtually invisible, and is custom-made for you. No wires or brackets to irritate your mouth! Unlike traditional braces, you can remove your aligner during oral hygiene routines and while eating your favorite meals. Brushing and flossing are not complicated; you don’t have to give up any foods you love.
What Issues Can Invisalign Correct?
Invisalign orthodontic care corrects many of the same issues as traditional metal braces. Below are some common dental problems that aligners can repair:
- Overcrowding – when there is very little space for the teeth in the mouth, the teeth tend to overlap, making it challenging to have the best oral health possible. Overcrowding can cause poor dental health because of tooth decay and increase the chances of periodontal disease.
- Gaps – significant gaps between teeth can occur because of missing teeth or abnormal jaw growth.
- Crossbite – happens when upper teeth bite down on the inside of the lower teeth, leading to uneven wear and even erosion of the bone. Read more here.
- Overbite – is when the upper teeth project further than the lower teeth and are often followed by jaw pain and TMJ disorder.
- Underbite – is the opposite of an overbite. The lower teeth project further than the upper teeth creating jaw pain and a possible TMJ disorder.
What Does Invisalign Treatment Involve?
Dr. Saint Jean devises a treatment plan that is perfect for you. We will take several photographs, digital scans, and X-rays of your teeth and jaw.
Doing this lets the dentist or orthodontist digitally move your teeth on a computer monitor and view the jaw from all angles. This incredible technology foresees how Invisalign will change facial aesthetics after your treatment.
These records are sent to the laboratory, where two or more sets of aligners are made to fit your unique teeth using 3-D imaging technology. The manufacturing process may take four to five weeks.
Once the aligners return from the laboratory, we start the treatment by inserting the first set. We give you detailed instructions on putting and removing them.
What Should I Consider When Wearing Invisalign Trays?
Invisalign trays should be worn for 20-22 hours daily, except while eating and drinking. Not following this time frame will extend your overall treatment time. Removing the aligners when consuming food or drink is essential, as debris can get trapped between the trays and the teeth, leading to tooth decay.
You can expect to feel sore for the first few days after each new tray. This light ache is a common symptom and good news as it proves that your teeth are moving into their correct positions. On average, new trays are necessary every two weeks.
How do I care for my Invisalign?
Clean your aligners twice daily by brushing them precisely as you brush your teeth. Brushing gently with a toothbrush and water takes only a few minutes.
Once you take the aligners out, rinse them thoroughly to reduce bacteria. Avoid running them under hot water, as extreme temperatures can warp the plastic.
Will Invisalign Affect My Speech?
At the beginning of treatment, most patients experience a slight lisp right that disappears within a few days. Continuing to wear the aligners while talking will help your speech adjust quickly.
Why Choose Invisalign Over Other Products?
There are many clear aligner options, but Invisalign is the gold standard. Invisalign has treated 9 million smiles and counting! It is the most trusted brand in invisible aligners.
